Italy Day Twelve –  Rome and Orvieto

Italy Day 12: It was a beautiful sunny Sunday and we had the morning free, so we took off to see the local sights. We first went to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in what was once the Baths of Diocletian, which were the largest baths of Ancient Rome. The church was constructed at the site of the former frigidarium and incorporates several elements from the baths. The repurposing plan for the Basilica and originally done by Michelangelo, and it was very beautiful. After visiting this Basilica, we took in the grandiose buildings of the Piazza della Repubblica and then headed over to Chiesa di Santa Maria della Vittoria to see this small 17th century church housing Bernini’s dramatic carving “The Ecstasy of St. Teresa”. Then we headed over to Via Giosue Carducci to see the original rock from before Christ that formed the original city walls of Ancient Rome. Finally, we explored Borghese Gardens then jumped on the bus for Orvieto. We capped the day at Led Zeppelin’s restaurant/Culinary School where Lorenzo entertained us with cooking demonstrations and a truly memorable feast.
