Australia and New Zealand 2024 – Day Twenty-two

Day  Twenty-two,  December 8, 2024 – Hokitika, New Zealand

Well, it poured rain most of the day and there wasn’t much to do because Hokitika is a beach town. However, we took a motor coach tour of the Hokitika area and checked out the Hokitika Museum which had a fantastic exhibit of Greenstone (aka Pounamu). Greenstone, aka Jade, or pounamu as the Maori people call it, is only found in certain areas of the West Coast of the South Island; mainly the Hokitika area or Milford Sound area. After lunch at a local bakery, we visited the Westland Greenstone store, where the owner told us all about this precious treasure and demonstrated how he takes it from hard rock to jewelry in many different steps.
