Day Six, November 22, 2024 – Melbourne, Australia
After breakfast, our group set out on a walking tour of Melbourne. There are many nice shops and arcades. Apparently, coffee is a big deal in Melbourne, they enjoy it in many different ways, so many that one needs a cheat sheet. See here for more on this: https://www.afar.com/magazine/8-ways-to-order-a-coffee-in-australia-and-get-what-you-actually-want
We were not fans of the coffee, it was too strong for our tastes and decaf just does not exist, in either coffee or tea. With our group, we checked out the impressive State Library of Victoria, and joined the crowd waiting in line for it to open. It would remind one of the Library of Congress in Washington DC and is very nice.
We met with some members of the indigenous community at the Koorie Heritage Trust who explained Aboriginal past and customs. Australia has over 250 Aboriginal tribes (aka Mobs), each with its own language and territory.
Then, the two of us walked to and toured the Shrine of Remembrance which was built to honor the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I, but now functions as a memorial to all Australians who have served in any war. The museum in the memorial was very extensive. Then we walked down the street to check out the National Gallery of Victoria and enjoyed some colorful exhibits.
